Jay and I coach a flag football team of 6th-8th graders together. It something I really enjoy doing and many times is a highlight of my weekend!
In one of our recent games, we hit some adversity early- the other team scored on their first possession, and we were down. As the kids came over to the sideline, I could sense their frustration and anxiety. But as the coach, I knew everything would be ok.
How did I know?
Well, the first possession seemed to be a bit of a fluke. All our defenders were aligned properly. The other team got a first down off a tipped ball. And when the other team scored, we had three players in position who just didn’t make a play.
Then the other team scored again… Uh-oh
The kids were clearly on edge, but as coaches we decided to stick to the plan. We reminded our players why we put the plan in place. We talked about why it would work. And we reviewed their assignments and asked them to put faith in the system we built.
And suddenly, a switch flipped… We started playing much better and playing the way we planned to. We didn’t do anything different other than help the kids gain confidence and do what we practiced. You could see the kids’ energy go up and enthusiasm grow!
How did the game end? We ended up pulling away in the second half and winning by four touchdowns! The kids were happy and so were the coaches!
For a lot of investors, the first part of 2022 has been a lot like those first few possessions when we got scored on. The stock market is volatile. Interest rates are rising. Inflation is up. There is a lot going on. And it can certainly cause anxiety and uncertainty.
But that doesn’t mean the plan an investor has in place won’t work. Maybe their plan accounted for these anomalies. Maybe their plan is built to help them stay the course. Maybe it is time to talk to a “coach” before making a sudden change. And maybe, if that person doesn’t have a plan, now is a good time to create one.
At Plybon & Associates, we are happy to help you create a plan that works for you or review a plan you already have in place. Our goal is for every client to have a plan that helps them “win by four touchdowns!”
